With unusually deep and well defined carving, this superb quality Victorian shell cameo depicts a bearded gentleman of the time, and is set into a Whitby Jet surround, in turn set into a top quality solid sterling silver mount, for wear as a brooch. The carving is so sensitively done, with skin and fabric texture, each hair and gold of clothing given the care needed to bring it to the pinnacle of realism mixed with renaissance style. As the cameo moves, the shifting aspect highlights just how deep the carving is - its combined with forced perspective to create an extremely 3d impression of the man actually being there and looking at you.
This is much better quality than normal cameos from this period and it shows in how well its been cared for. It dates from around 1870/80 and is in very good, fully wearable condition, with nibbling to the jet, which is normal as it's such a fragile material. It weighs 14.4 grams and measures 1.5 x 1.25 inches. What's more, I offer layaway deals so there's no need to let any of my listings slip through your fingers - just ask!
