Victorian Period Shell Cameo Three Graces Brooch, Gold Filled Mounting

  
Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a beautiful antique Shell Cameo "Three Graces" brooch mounted in a lovely gold filled mounting. Elegant classic Roman female design with intricate details carved in high relief.

Beautiful coloration with tones of light brown in the background and white in the cameo carving. The cameo is fitted in an unusual embossed decorated mounting with "double heart" medallions.

The piece is in excellent condition with no noted damage. Measures 3/8" high, 1 3/4" in length and 1 1/2 wide. In ancient mythology, these three daughters of Zeus (also known as Splendor, Mirth and Good Cheer) were together the embodiment of beauty and grace. This subject has remained one of the most popular of all the mythological subjects depicted on shell cameos. Most generally seen dancing (probably to the music of Apollo's lyre).
