Victorian around 1875: Antique GEMME as a brooch the day after Thorvaldsen Gold Cameo. Victorian shell gem after Thorvaldsen as a brooch, around 1875. The present fine shell gem from Victorian times shows the finely cut representation of the goddess Aurora or Eos, the goddess of the dawn. The roses on her fingers take up antique descriptions like those of Homer, who described the goddess as "rose-fingered" and thus referred to the colors of the sunrise.

The motif of our brooch follows one of the best known representations of the Aurora. It comes from Berthel Thorwaldsen, the famous Danish sculptor. In 1836 he created a marble relief of the goddess, which has the genius of light on its back. It is now in the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen together with its counterpart, the "Night".

The present mussel gem repeats Thorvaldsen's image finding very precisely and was presumably conveyed through stitch patterns that Thorvaldsen had already made from his relief. An elaborate gold frame in an archaeological style encloses the finely cut gem and makes it wearable as a brooch.

The 15-carat gold frame is in the shape of the years around 1875, so that we can date the work in those years. The gem, which was carved in Italy, was probably brought to Great Britain by a traveler and probably only caught there. The brooch immediately impresses with its fine cut and graceful motif. It is a wonderful addition to any community collection and can also be worn effectively. Shell gem 4.0 x 5.1 cm gold 625/000, corresponds to 15 carats. 5.2 x 6.3 cm. We want you to be 100% satisfied!
